5G ROAMING DATA TRAFFIC FORECAST TO EXCEED 500 PETABYTES IN 2024: KALEIDO INTELLIGENCE
WITH CURRENT MARKET SCENARIOS NOT FAVOURABLE FOR TRAVEL AND CONSEQUENTLY HAVING AN IMPACT ON MOBILE ROAMERS AND ROAMING TRAFFIC, KALEIDO PREDICTS INCREASED ADOPTION FOR 5G ROAMING FROM 2023 ONWARDS.
London, April 22nd, 2020 – The rollout of 5G networks around the world, alongside an increasing number of 5G roaming agreement announcements by operators, means that mobile roaming is set to be transformed.
5G data roaming traffic generated by consumer mobile and IoT connections will exceed 500 Petabytes in 2024, according to new research by roaming experts Kaleido Intelligence. This will represent a cumulative roaming opportunity of over $7 billion in outbound and inbound revenues from consumer mobile and IoT connections over the next 4 years.
The research found that, given the low proportion of 5G roamers, short-term opportunity from 5G roaming will not be significantly impacted by the COVID-19 disruption.
Nitin Bhas, Chief of Strategy & Insights at Kaleido Intelligence added: “Undeniably, 5G roaming via consumer mobile devices and IoT will generate a substantial surge in data roaming traffic, enabling new value-added opportunities and services for mobile operators. We are predicting an increased adoption for 5G roaming only from 2023 onwards; however, given the very dynamic nature of market developments as a result of this global pandemic, we will review these numbers on a quarterly basis.”
5G Roaming Operator Survey Findings
Kaleido surveyed 60+ respondents across tier-1 operators around the world on their 5G roaming plans and requirements in Q1 2020. The questionnaire was developed by Kaleido in partnership with leading industry stakeholders and contained 20 questions.
Key findings included:
- Nearly 76% of the operators surveyed announced that they will launch 5G roaming in 2020, with 8% planning to launch in 2021. These timescales are subject to change following the economic impact of COVID-19.
- Despite being optimistic about 5G driving roaming revenues in the future, a majority of the respondents (31%) confirmed that they expected costs to rise as well, with a further 14% expecting costs to stay flat.
