London, March 10th, 2020 – Kaleido Intelligence’s Roaming Data Hub – Q1 202O predicts a substantial decline in annual inbound and outbound travel numbers, representing nearly 11% fall in travel volume, with global outbound trip volume reaching 1.33 billion in 2020. Kaleido had previously estimated a 5.3% y-o-y growth for 2020, with leading travel markets expected to continue growth alongside contribution from emerging markets.

Following the spread of the Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) worldwide, reaching over 100 countries around the world, the tourism industry is witnessing significant impact in terms of inbound and outbound travel.

Over 300 Million Fewer Trips Forecast, But Long Term Growth Still Expected

Kaleido’s H2 2019 Roaming Data Hub predicted that the number of international outbound trips will reach 1.95 billion in 2024, up from an estimated 1.5 billion in 2019, representing an average annual growth rate of 5%. However, given the Covid-19 impact, Kaleido Intelligence has revised the forecasts to 1.64 billion in 2024, representing an average annual growth rate of 1.8% from 2019.

Nitin Bhas, Chief of Strategy & Insights at Kaleido Intelligence added: “Understandably, this means that there will be an impact on mobile roamers and usage around the world. For that reason, we have revised our forecasts for global travel, mobile roamers and outbound and inbound roaming traffic and revenues.”

Consequently, Kaleido forecasts that global roaming data traffic generated by consumer mobile devices is forecast to reach 1,400 PB in 2024, compared to the 1,700 PB previously forecast.
